Senior WordPress Full Stack Engineer – React / GraphQL / PHP

Location: New York City, NY

Work Model: Hybrid – 3 Days Onsite per Week

Job Overview

We are looking for a Senior WordPress Full Stack Engineer with strong hands-on expertise in WordPress, PHP, React, and GraphQL to build and support scalable, high-traffic digital content platforms.

The ideal candidate will have deep WordPress development experience combined with modern frontend engineering and API development. This role requires someone comfortable working across the CMS, frontend, APIs, integrations, caching, performance, and production environments.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and enhance enterprise-scale WordPress applications and content platforms .
\n
• Develop custom WordPress plugins, themes, Gutenberg blocks, custom post types, custom fields, and taxonomies using PHP.
\n
• Build modern, responsive frontend applications using React, JavaScript, and TypeScript .
\n
• Design and integrate GraphQL APIs connecting WordPress with React-based frontend applications.
\n
• Work with GraphQL schemas, resolvers, query optimization, caching, authorization, and API evolution.
\n
• Develop and support headless/decoupled WordPress architectures .
\n
• Integrate WordPress with REST/GraphQL APIs, webhooks, third-party content feeds, scheduled jobs, search/indexing solutions, and caching layers .
\n
• Support complex content management and editorial/publishing workflows.
\n
• Troubleshoot production issues across WordPress, PHP, React, GraphQL APIs, caching, and external integrations .
\n
• Optimize applications for scalability, performance, Core Web Vitals, SEO, and accessibility/WCAG .
\n
• Collaborate with product, design, editorial, engineering, and other technical/non-technical stakeholders.
\n

Required Skills

\n
• 8+ years of overall software engineering experience.
\n
• 5+ years of hands-on WordPress development experience.
\n
• Strong hands-on experience with PHP and custom WordPress development.
\n
• Strong experience developing custom WordPress plugins and themes .
\n
• Strong hands-on experience with React and modern JavaScript/TypeScript .
\n
• Deep hands-on experience with GraphQL , including API integration and optimization.
\n
• Experience with headless/decoupled WordPress architectures .
\n
• Strong understanding of WordPress content modeling, including Gutenberg, custom post types, custom fields/meta, taxonomies, and publishing workflows .
\n
• Experience integrating applications through REST/GraphQL APIs and third-party services .
\n
• Experience supporting scalable or high-traffic production applications .
\n
• Strong troubleshooting and performance optimization skills.
\n
• Understanding of responsive design, accessibility, SEO, Core Web Vitals, caching, and secure development practices.
\n
• Strong communication and stakeholder collaboration skills.
\n

Preferred Skills

\n
• Experience with WordPress VIP or similar enterprise/high-traffic managed WordPress platforms.
\n
• Experience with WPGraphQL .
\n
• Experience building large-scale publishing, media, news, or other content-heavy digital platforms.
\n

Mandatory Technical Stack

WordPress + PHP + React + GraphQL

Candidates must be comfortable working onsite in New York City 3 days per week and attending an in-person interview as part of the selection process.
